Bangkok Bars

As befits a thriving capital city there are more bars in Bangkok than I would want to count. So in this section we have tried to list a few friendly bars for drinkers. These are not girly bars, although a few may have an apparent surfeit of staff. More bars are listed on our music venues pages.

Khaosan Road

Sukhumvit Road

Bamboo Bar
Sukhumvit Soi 3.
Tel: 02-253 2462.
Roomy pool bar with good expat following. Busy in the afternoons.

Bull's Head, The
595/10 Soi Sukhumvit 33/1,
Phrom Phong.
Tel: 02-259 4444 & 261 0665.
Open: 11:30am-2am.
Credit cards accepted.
A classic expats' pub that's often dubbed 'the locals' local'. Great for good quality pub grub, friendly chat and bar games. The pub is run by Scotsman Brian Anderson, a nice guy who crams as many events into each week as possible.

Cat House
1st Floor Nana Plaza.
Sukhumvit Soi 4.
This is a great place for people-watching, and keeping an eye on the action around Nana Plaza.

Chequers
Sukhumvit Soi 4.
Tel: 02-255 3993.
Good Brit local with long time Bangkok resident Peter, the manager, normally around to dispense cheer and conversation. Woody, the friendly owner, props up the bar on Wednesdays and Fridays. A large screen TV upstairs for sports enthusiasts.

Dubliner Irish Pub
Washington Square, Suhkumvit.
Tel: 02-204 1843.
Offers great British and Irish food and draught Guinness and Kilkenny, among others, to an almost exclusively expat crowd.. Main music event is Life Ater Nine on Fridays at 10pm.

Huntsman Pub, The
Basement, The Landmark Hotel,
171 Sukhumvit Road.
Tel: 02-254 0444.
Expensive place to drink, when compared to the nearby bars, but is part of this landmark hotel. Live musak and table service make it more like an international hotel bar than a pub.

Jools
Sukhumvit Soi 4.
Tel: 02-252 6413.
Love it or hate it, Jools is never boring when the rumbustious Big Dave is in his seat. When the bell starts ringing the going gets tough. Good food available.

Londoner Brew Pub, The
Basement of UBC Building II,
Sukhumvit Road, corner of Soi 33.
Tel: 02 261 0238.
Large English theme pub with its own brewery. Not much like the ones back home, or maybe too much like them for some.

Ship, The
Sukhumvit Soi 23.
Just by the entrance to Soi. Cowboy this is a popular refuge for those who just want a beer, or several before entering or leaving Bangkok's top girly bar strip.

Silom/Suriwong area
(inc. Patpong)

Madrid Pizza
Patpong.
Don't be put off by the pizza bit, this is a small bar with a good food menu. Try the SOS for breakfast: if you are feeling strong. This is now the last bar of Vietnam vintage left. Popular with older US residents and plenty of others besides.

O'Reilly's
Silom Road/Soi Thanaya.
Irish theme pub trading off its location in the popular thoroughfare. Has live music some nights and lots of beers and food from back home.

Shenanigans
Convent Road.
A large and popular Irish theme pub popular with the after work crowd and younger residents, as well as those passing through. Live music most nights and a good party atmosphere. Live sport when appropriate and a good food menu featuring lots of British favourites.

Tavern Bar
Patpong 2.
Some maybe surprised to see this here, but this is a friendly bar that has been around forever. Play darts with the girls at your peril. Ped is the likable boss lady.

Khaosan Road

Gullivers
Khaosan Road,
Samsen Road end.
This a large operation that is very popular with the younger expat/tourist elements of Khaosan Road. Most nights it's jam-packed with all kinds of different people from all over the world, except Lilliputians!
